Cardinal George Appoints by Helen Hitchcock
New BCL Members, AdvisorsCardinal Francis George, Chicago, who assumed chairmanship of the Bishops' Committee on the Liturgy (BCL) following the November 2002 bishops' meeting, has appointed new committee members, consultants and advisors.
Cardinal George has been the US bishops' representative to the International Committee on English in the Liturgy (ICEL) since 1997, and has served on the Bishops' Committee on Doctrine.
The seven committee members are Archbishop Oscar Lipscomb (Mobile, former BCL chairman), Archbishop Justin Rigali (St. Louis), Archbishop Daniel Pilarczyk (Cincinnati, former ICEL chairman, past president of the USCCB and past chairman of Doctrine and Liturgy committees), Bishop Blase Cupich (Rapid City), Bishop John Smith (Trenton, NJ), and Bishop Alan Vigneron (Oakland).
Cardinal George and Archbishops Lipscomb and Rigali are also members of the Vox Clara committee established in July 2001 by the Congregation for Divine Worship to oversee translations.
Appointed consultants to the BCL are Cardinal Roger Mahony (Los Angeles), Bishop Carlos Sevilla, SJ (Yakima), Bishop Daniel Dinardo (Sioux City), and Bishop George Murry, SJ (St. Thomas, VI).
Newly appointed advisors to the BCL are Monsignor Francis Mannion, founder of the Society for Catholic Liturgy, head of Chicago's Liturgical Institute and columnist for Our Sunday Visitor; Sister Janet Baxendale, SC, former head of the liturgy office of the Archdiocese of New York, and Father Chrysogonus Waddell, OCSO, of Gethsemane Abbey, Kentucky, a musician and composer.
Advisors to the BCL also include ex-officio members from the Federation of Diocesan Liturgical Commissions and the Institute for Hispanic Liturgy. Monsignor Frederick McManus, emeritus professor of canon law of Catholic University of America, former director of the BCL and founding officer of ICEL, is a perpetual consultant to the BCL.
