FDLC Convention 2003:
"Winds of Change, Fires of Hope"
Cardinal Arinze to Keynote,
Bishop Trautman to Receive Award

Cardinal Francis Arinze will present the keynote address to the annual convention of the Federation of Diocesan Liturgical Commissions (FDLC), "Winds of Change, Fires of Hope -- The 40th Anniversary of the Constitution on the Liturgy". The 2003 convention will be held in San Antonio, October 7-11.

The address will stress highlights of the liturgical renewal initiated by Sacrosanctum Concilium, Vatican II's Council's Constitution on the Liturgy, issued in 1963. The cardinal will also preside at the opening Eucharist at San Fernando Cathedral on October 7.

Award to Bishop Trautman

The FDLC will present its annual "Frederick McManus" award to Erie Bishop Donald Trautman, chairman of the US Bishops' Committee on Doctrine and past chairman of the Bishops' Committee on the Liturgy (BCL). He has been an outspoken critic of the Holy See's Instruction on translation of liturgical texts, Liturgiam authenticam.

The bishop has also served on the Committee for the Review of Scripture Translations, and is a member of the board of We Believe!, an organization of liturgical progressivists founded by Father Edward Foley of Catholic Theological Union in Chicago.

Convention Events

This will be the first time the FDLC has been addressed by the cardinal prefect of the Congregation for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments.

Other plenary speakers are well-known for progressivist views. Principal speakers and titles of their addresses are:

Sister Joyce Ann Zimmerman, CPPS, director of the Institute for Liturgical Ministry at the University of Dayton, "Liturgy: Transformation and Spirituality for the Life of the World";

Richard Gaillardetz, Catholic studies professor of the University of Toledo, "Sacrosanctum Concilium: Celebrating an Ecclesial Renewal";

Father Kevin Irwin, professor of Liturgy and Sacramental Theology at Catholic University of America, "Sacrosanctum Concilium after Forty Years: Retrospective and Prospective".

Workshop presenters include, among others, Fathers Jake Empereur, SJ, and Virgilio Elizondo, both of San Antonio. Monsignor James Moroney and Sister Doris Turek of the BCL will report on the status of Spanish/English translations.

Three FDLC Resolutions are proposed, and if approved, will be given to the BCL for further action.
