About The Introits for Advent
The Introits for Advent, rendered in English verse by liturgical musician Kathleen Pluth and published here, provide a very workable means of introducing the Introits into your parish this Advent, which is the beginning of the 2014 Liturgical Year.
Following is her explanation of how they may be used:
Parishes that are interested in making a beginning with the Proper texts of the Mass, yet do not yet know where to begin, might be interested in this resource for Advent.
Each of the daily entrance antiphons for the Masses of Advent have been translated into long meter hymn form, so that they may be sung to many familiar, common hymn tunes.
Examples of tunes that would work well are:
“Jesus Shall Reign,” or “I Know that My Redeemer Lives” (Tune: DUKE STREET); “All People That on Earth Do Dwell” (OLD HUNDREDTH); or Advent tunes such as “Creator of the Stars of Night” (CREATOR ALME SIDERUM); “Lift up Your Heads” (TRURO); or even “O Come, O Come, Emanuel” (VENI, VENI, EMANUEL).
Parishes accustomed to sing-ing an entrance hymn can easily substitute these antiphons for the entrance hymn, or sing them before or after the entrance hymn on a Sunday, without needing special musical notation or rehearsal.
The Advent Introits that appear here may be reproduced for parish use. You are free to make copies and keep them in the pews or on a table for daily Mass. Then simply choose a long meter tune that is familiar to the local parish, and begin singing the antiphon in this low-key, easy way.
